The meeting was also attended by Dr. Maouelainin Ben Khalihenna, CORCAS Secretary General, and Council member Moulay Ahmed Mghizlat. During the discussions, Mr. Ould Errachid updated his guests on the latest developments regarding the Sahara issue, particularly at the United Nations level, and on the revitalization of the political process following Morocco’s initiative granting broad autonomy to the region.
He outlined the stages of the autonomy plan’s implementation, consultations with local populations, and comparisons with autonomy projects worldwide. Mr. Ould Errachid also highlighted that the plan has been endorsed in all UN Security Council resolutions since Morocco submitted it in 2007, emphasizing its credibility as a serious and sustainable solution.
The President further addressed the growing international support for the Moroccan Sahara, particularly from the countries that have opened consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla, as well as the widespread backing for Morocco’s territorial integrity in Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Following the meeting, Ettore Rosato, coordinator of the Italian delegation and Secretary General of the Azione Party, stated that the visit aimed to reaffirm his group’s support for the autonomy plan as a long-term peace proposal. He expressed confidence that an international resolution under the UN Security Council would pave the way for lasting peace.
Mr. Rosato also praised the socio-economic development in the Southern Provinces, highlighting the region’s infrastructure and potential across multiple sectors. He noted that the visit coincides with Morocco’s 50th anniversary of the Green March and is part of celebrations marking 200 years of diplomatic and friendly relations between Morocco and Italy.
The delegation included seven members of the Italian parliament, representing both the majority and opposition in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
As part of their visit, which concludes today, the Italian parliamentary intergroup also traveled to the Southern Provinces to meet local authorities and elected officials, and to observe key socio-economic development projects in the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region. The delegation also held meetings with other Moroccan officials.
