Twinning between Laâyoune and Sorrento to support partnership and attract investment

The chairman of the Royal Advisory Council on Saharan Affairs, Khalihenna Ould Errachid, met on February 27, 2017 at the Council's headquarters with Giuseppe Cuomo, the Mayor of the Italian city of Sorrento, who is visiting Morocco from 22 to 28th of February.


An interview was attended by Dr. Maouelainin Ben Khallihenna Maouelainin, CORCAS Secretary General.


This visit by Guiseppe Cuomo to Morocco takes place within the framework of the action to strengthen the partnership between the municipalities and the Italian regions and their counterparts in the Moroccan Sahara region, in particular the twinning agreement between the cities Of Laayoune and Sorrento.


This twinning, which is considered the first action of this type of a Saharawi town with a European city, was signed by Khalihenna Ould Errachid, as President of Laâyoune Municipal Council, and his Italian counterpart in 2009.


Negotiations between the Moroccan and Italian parties on the twinning of Laâyoune and Sorrento began in December 2006. The final agreement of the Italian Government was obtained at the end of March 2009, after His Majesty the King's approval in October 2008.


The text of the convention refers to cooperation in all sectors and consolidation of dialogue between the two cities and the two shores of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
