Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki has underlined that the Algerian regime "is taking hostage" the populations held in Tindouf "for a fallacious political choice", deeming it wise to see them join their homeland, Morocco, instead of believing in erroneous perceptions.

"The Algerian regime on the decline sells illusions to the Sahrawis that it holds as hostages in the service of a fallacious political choice", he said during a meeting organized by videoconference by an Algerian association on the situation of freedoms and democracy in Algeria.

He added that the Algerian regime has committed a crime against its own people, who revolted against it, against the Maghreb Union and against the Sahrawis held against their will in Tindouf for four decades under difficult conditions, while questioning the "illusions it is selling".

"Held hostage by the Algerian regime", the separatists of the Polisario "seek a chimerical homeland which will never exist", he pointed out.

The former Tunisian president defended in this regard the idea of living under Moroccan sovereignty instead of "being under the protectorate or under pressure in an Algerian Saharan region".

They will have the right to settle in Tunisia or to work in Libya or Algeria, to contribute to the elections taking place in the Maghreb countries in an open space that ensures them a life of dignity among 100 million North Africans, he said.

The Algerian regime "is in an unenviable position", because it is facing "an unprecedented peaceful popular protest movement, which was the major event in Algeria last year", said Mr. Marzouki, stressing that this "hirak" has proven its ability to achieve "a civil, democratic and peaceful revolution".

The methods tested since independence by this regime, "which cannot be reformed and which is in political and moral decline, have become ineffective "in the face of a people who know how to get out of it.

Mr. Marzouki also underlined that the Algerian regime is trying, through the systematic repression campaign, to sow terror among the people, because it is "a system which can only evolve within the framework of violence".
