With all due respect to Algeria and its separatist Polisario puppet, international community as represented at the United Nations, has never ceased to reaffirm the relevance of a political solution to the Moroccan Sahara, which finds its incarnation in the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom as a means of settling this artificial regional dispute.

The examination of the Sahara issue next month at the level of the Security Council, which will vote for the renewal of the MINURSO mandate, will have to follow the same logic favoring a political and consensual solution to this artificial regional dispute and which jeopardize the future and aspirations of the peoples of the Maghreb, at a time when the world needs unity and solidarity.

The Security Council, the supreme executive body of the United Nations, is very clear in this regard, as underlined by its last resolution on the Sahara issue, 2494, which reaffirms the preeminence of the initiative of autonomy, within the framework of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco.

This reference resolution thus enshrines the parameters of the solution of this regional dispute, which can only be political, realistic, pragmatic, lasting and of compromise.

It also established the round table process, with the full participation of Algeria, as the only way to lead the exclusively UN political process, to its conclusion.Resolution 2494, adopted on October 30, 2019, also asked, like those that preceded it since 2011, the registration of the sequestered populations in the Tindouf camps, refused by Algeria in violation of its international obligations.

The absence of this census favors, in particular, the diversion of humanitarian aid intended for the Tindouf camps by Polisario leaders and local officials, for their personal enrichment, as confirmed in the inspection reports of UNHCR, WFP and European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), as well as by the European Parliament.

This situation also contributes to the perpetuation of serious and systematic violations of human rights and international humanitarian law by the populations of these camps, directly involving the responsibility of the host country, Algeria, as recently confirmed by the Committee of Human Rights and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the Human Rights Council.

The United Nations General Secretariat also insists, for its part, on the regional character of this artificial conflict and on the need for a consensual political solution, as recommended by the Security Council.

In a report to the General Assembly last month, covering the period from 2011 to 2020, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has, in fact, exclusively mentioned the political solution, resolution 2494 and the round table process, by addressing the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

The UN chief has thus totally ignored, as he has done for two decades, the settlement plan and referendum,  a new setback to the desperate attempts of Algeria and Polisario, to resuscitate these obsolete plans, buried by the Security Council since 2001.

Regardless of the opponents of Morocco's territorial integrity, the Security Council and the international community have chosen the path of legality by irreversibly opting for a political, realistic, pragmatic, durable and compromise solution, embodied by the Autonomy initiative, whose seriousness and credibility are reaffirmed in the 16 resolutions adopted by the United Nations executive body since 2007.
