Morocco denounced Monday in Geneva, Algeria’s “sterile” rhetoric on human rights in the Sahara and called Algiers to be concerned about human rights violations committed on its own territory.

“I call on the Algerian Ambassador to avoid sterile and embarrassing discussions for the new High Commissioner for Human Rights, the President of the Human Rights Council and all delegations,” Morocco’s chargé d’Affaires in Geneva, Hassan Boukili, said before the Human Rights Council (HRC) in response to a statement made by Algeria’s Ambassador who talked about the “situation of human rights” in the Moroccan Sahara in tendentious political terms.

The Moroccan diplomat also called on Algeria to engage sincerely and constructively in the search for a consensual political solution to the Western Sahara dispute in the context of the United Nations.

“This is a fundamentally political dispute that is fully taken into consideration by the United Nations in New York, as part of a political process involving all parties, including Algeria,” he recalled.

Tackling the situation in the North African sub-region, Boukili said that Morocco is concerned, as a member of the HRC, about the deteriorating human rights situation in Kabylia, Ghardaya and Tindouf camps in Algeria.

“We would have wished that the updating report of the High Commissioner would have addressed this triple situation. Human rights violations in these three regions should have attracted the attention of the Human Rights council”, he noted.
