By renewing his call to all parties for the resumption of the political process for a lasting solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, reminds Algeria of its full responsibility in this conflict and castigates its policy of obstruction, said U.S. experts.

"At the end of the visit of his Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura in the region, Mr. Guterres understands that one party is delaying the negotiations and threatening the continuity of the political process. Algeria has done everything to derail the round tables," said in a statement to MAP-Washington, US expert in international relations, Irina Tsukerman.
The UN Secretary General "is an experienced diplomat who knows well such manipulations," said the analyst for whom "the only real way to revive the process of roundtables is to put pressure on the party that tries to derail it, in this case Algeria.

At a press conference in New York, the UN Secretary General called on all parties to the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara to resume the political process to achieve a solution to this regional dispute.

While considering that "allowing Algeria to get away with endless manipulation of the political process and the hijacking of international forums, can only have the opposite effect", the American expert was keen to point out that "it is not Morocco that will be affected by Algeria's refusal to engage in the political process, but those held hostage in the camps of Tindouf" on Algerian soil.

Agreeing with him, US political scientist Calvin Dark stressed the importance of Mr. Guterres' new call to all parties to "engage and compromise" in order to bring the UN political process to a successful conclusion, and allow the region to live in peace and cooperation.

"I fully agree with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, on the fact that all parties must make compromises for a solution to the conflict," said this connoisseur of the Maghreb.

But for this, Algeria must "join the negotiating table to peacefully resolve this conflict once and for all.

"The Secretary General warned that we must focus on the growing security threats in the region, not on distracting from a conflict that has gone on for far too long," said the president and co-founder of RC Communications think tank based in the US capital.

For the Vice President for Global Affairs of the American University of New England (UNE), Anouar Majid, the message of Mr. Guterres "is clearly addressed to the party that continues to seek stalemate and shirk its responsibilities, namely Algeria.

"Wanting to shirk its responsibility as a stakeholder in the conflict, by boycotting the roundtables, is foolish and ridiculous on the part of the Algerian regime," said the Moroccan-American expert.

While hailing the UN political process, Security Council Resolution 2602 also enshrines, Mr. Majid said, the pre-eminence of the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious and credible way and the only prospect for a final outcome this artificial conflict imposed on Morocco.
