Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, praised on Wednesday the "constructive" role played by Spain in seeking a political solution to the Sahara issue.

The minister, who was speaking at a press conference following talks in Rabat with his Spanish counterpart, Alfonso Dastis, said that the Sahara issue was discussed at this meeting in the light of the latest resolution of the UN Security Council and the constructive role played by Spain as a member of the group of friends of the Sahara in the elaboration and the defense of this resolution.

The only initiative on the table is the Moroccan autonomy plan, he said, noting that "unfortunately, the schema of the political process did not allow this initiative, which was deemed serious and credible by the Security Council, to be discussed and explained within the framework of the political process".

"This is why Morocco insists that the tour de table of the process should reflect the real stakeholders so that the process can be fruitful," he said.

"We have tried an old scheme that has did not produce any result, not because what is on the table is not attractive, but because those around the table are not the real stakeholders," Bourita pointed out.

Talks with the Spanish minister also focused on regional issues, including the situation in Libya and the partnership in Africa and Latin America, he said.
