The debates that took place at the International Trade Commission (INTA) on Tuesday, February 20, on the Association Agreement between Morocco and European Union reaffirmed the need to protect EU agreements with partner Morocco.

This must be done in order to settle the controversy artificially fueled about the region of the Moroccan Sahara so that this region is explicitly concerned by the terms of reference of the association agreement.

In this respect, the European Commission is working for the continuation of the partnership with Morocco and for the agreement which will be renewed next July, to include explicitly products from the southern provinces, the benefits of these agreements on Saharawi inhabitants are evaluated in the light of the effects of a hypothetical non-application of the agreement on the region.

The interventions all dealt with the representation of the inhabitants of the southern provinces. The members of the preparatory committee said that Polisario is in no way the only representative of Saharawis, adding even that Sahrawis who live in the region do not recognize the Front as a representative.

The European Parliament's committee also welcomed the quality of the debates in the current series of meetings until February 28 between Brussels and Rabat for the amendment of the free trade agreement.

The Committee also paid tribute to the diversity of the speakers during these meetings, in particular Moroccan Saharawi parliamentarians, members of the regional councils of the Sahara region, chambers of commerce, fisheries and agriculture as well as the economic actors of the Sahara in Laayoune and Dakhla, Southern Provinces Development Agency, research centers and human rights institutions in the region.
