The parliamentary group of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which leads Portugal's ruling right-wing coalition, reiterated on Friday its support for Morocco's autonomy initiative for the Sahara as the most serious, credible and constructive basis for resolving this regional dispute.
During a session at the Assembly of the Republic (parliament), the PSD stressed that Portugal's position “leaves no room for ambiguity,” recalling that the Portuguese government supports the autonomy initiative presented by the Kingdom within the framework of the United Nations, deemed the most serious, credible and constructive basis for resolving this regional dispute.
It added that this position was officially confirmed on July 22, 2025, in a joint statement from the Kingdom of Morocco and the Portuguese Republic.
The PSD stressed that the Portuguese government's position was welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita, noting that Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch reiterated his thanks to the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs for this clear stance during a recent meeting in New York.
The PSD also insisted that the Portuguese government has never established any contact with the so-called “sahrawi republic.”
The PSD's statement came during a debate at the Portuguese parliament on the recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, initiated by the Chega party.
