The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe has published in its Official Gazette the legal texts establishing an embassy in Rabat and a Consulate General in Laayoune.

In its BO N 31, Tuesday, April 6, Sao Tome and Principe informs that the Decree-Law No. 10/2021 on the establishment of an embassy in Rabat, was considered and approved by the Council of Ministers of March 25, 2021 and promulgated on April 5, 2021, by the President of the Republic, Evaristo do Espirito Santo Carvalho, noting that this text enters into force upon its publication.

The creation of this embassy emanates, according to the Gazette, from the urgent need to establish in Rabat, capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, an embassy of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, whose area of jurisdiction includes the entire territory of the Kingdom of Morocco and other countries to be defined.

The same official document also informs that the decree-law No. 11/2021 on "establishment of the Consulate General of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe in Laayoune, Kingdom of Morocco" was reviewed and approved by the Council of Ministers of March 25, 2021 and promulgated by the President of the Republic on April 5, 2021.

The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe had inaugurated, on January 23, 2020, a Consulate General in Laayoune, in the presence of minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Santomean counterpart Elsa Teixeira de Barros Pinto.

Elsa Teixeira de Barros Pinto had said on this occasion that the opening of a Consulate General of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe in Laayoune represents "a historic and unforgettable moment" in relations between this country and Morocco.

She had explained that this diplomatic act with strong symbolic significance reflects in fact the willingness of her country to further develop its ties with the Kingdom in various areas "in a spirit of cooperation and friendship".

This action, she noted, is also meant to promote the exchange of views on issues of common interest at the African and international levels, given the fact that "there is a strong Santomean community established in Morocco”.
