The security crisis in the Tindouf camps has worsened recently due to the involvement of Polisario elements in organized crime activities and their relations with terrorist organizations in the Sahel, underlined Mohamed Tayyar, researcher in political studies.

This crisis has aroused distrust of the population towards the so-called security institutions, especially after the revelation of information according to which these “organs” were covering criminals or helping them to flee, in addition to the loss of  weapons from their headquarters, a indicated the researcher in an interview with the MAP.

Regarding the dangers of the involvement of Polisario elements in organized crime and terrorism activities, Mr. Tayyar specified that several information sites relating to “Polisario activists” claim that the five camps of Tindouf are experiencing a spread of organized crime, in relation to terrorist entities in the Sahel region, as well as control by gangs of traffickers from the territories of Tindouf camps.

The same sites reveal the involvement of Polisario officials in trafficking of all kinds, namely the diversion of products intended by humanitarian organizations for the population of Tindouf, trafficking of subsidized foodstuff from Algeria, fuel, drugs and weapons, as well as human trafficking, said the researcher who has just defended a doctoral thesis on the theme “the security crisis in the Sahel region and its dangers to Moroccan national security”.

Regarding the role of Algeria in what is currently happening in Tindouf camps, the researcher said that during the formation of these camps, in the first years of the Moroccan-Algerian conflict around the Sahara, the Algerian regime had kidnapped several Moroccan Saharawi citizens and banned them, years later, from working on Algerian territory and integrating the population of the South.

After the 1991 ceasefire, the young people of the Tindouf camps and the mobilized elements had no other choice than to resort to trafficking in all its forms and to join the activities of organized crime and armed organizations and terrorists in the Sahel region, he added.

Algeria is benefiting from the instability in the Tindouf camps and the Sahel in general, Tayyar continued, noting that this situation helps the neighboring country achieve two goals. First, the involvement of certain generals in drug trafficking, and interest they have in this situation of division in the Tindouf camps, added the researcher.

The second objective is for the Algerian regime to try to hamper the efforts of neighboring countries, particularly Mauritania and Mali, to explore mineral resources abounding in the region, by tolerating the development of organized crime and terrorism activities, and by ensuring to undermine the security and stability of Morocco.

This academic work aims, according to the researcher, to shed light on the security situation in the Sahel and its repercussions on Morocco. It highlights the historical presence of Morocco in this region. The defense jury for this thesis was composed of Mohamed Boujdad (president), Abdelhamid Benkhattab (supervisor and member) and professors Zakaria Abouddahab, Rachid Merzguioui and Khalid Chegraoui.
