The seizure on Saturday of about 5.8 tonnes of chira by the prefectural service of the Laayoune judicial police is part of the relentless fight against international trafficking in drugs and psychotropics.


The Laayoune prefect of police, Mr. Hassan Abou Dahab, explained that this operation, which also resulted in the arrest of 14 individuals including a Mauritanian and a Senegalese, is part of “the global security strategy with a proactive dimension adopted by the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) and Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) with a view to monitoring and combating transnational organized crime, in particular that linked to the international traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances ”.


These include blocking the way for these criminal networks which have international ramifications and which operate simultaneously in the field of illegal immigration and human trafficking, he added in an interview with MAP. 


The police chief of Laâyoune noted that this kind of qualitative operations is the fruit of efforts deployed by DGSN in order to combat all forms of organized crime, international trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as branching links of these criminal networks.


He also highlighted the essential and effective role played by the central services of DGSN in supporting and guiding the action carried out by the various decentralized services, in permanent and continuous coordination with the services. 


The goal, he said, is to further strengthen the fight against international criminal phenomena, including international trafficking in drugs and psychotropic substances and illegal immigration.


Laâyoune's operation is similar to a series of operations carried out by the security services in the cities of Tangier, Oujda, Nador, Fez, Agadir, Casablanca, as well as in other cities and regions of the Kingdom, 


Mr. Abou Dahab also recalled that the security services of the Laayoune police prefecture have succeeded, through a series of qualifying operations, in dismantling several criminal networks active in the international traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.


In the past few months, 33 cases have been registered within the territorial jurisdiction of the prefecture which extends from Sidi Ifni to El Guergarate and 111 suspects have been arrested, in addition to the seizure of approximately 45.44 tonnes of chira, he said.


In addition, 4 Kalashnikovs, 139 bullets, 9 shotguns, 250 cartridges, 33 cars, 2 trucks, 7 motorcycles, 18 inflatable boats and 15 marine engines, in addition to an amount estimated at 428,293 MAD, he listed.


Saturday, the prefectural police department of Laâyoune proceeded, in coordination with the elements of the Royal Gendarmerie and on the basis of precise information provided by the services of the DGSN and DGST, arrested fourteen individuals, including Mauritanian and Senegalese, suspected of links with a criminal network active in the international drug and psychotropic drug trafficking and possession of firearms.


The searches carried out in a Saharan area about 30 km from Laâyoune, in the direction of Smara, led to the seizure of a Kalashnikov, 66 bullets, hunting rifle and 114 cartridges, in addition to 216 platelets of drugs a total weight of around 5.8 tonnes of chira.-
