Jordan reiterated, before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, its support for Morocco's autonomy initiative as a "serious and realistic" basis to end the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking before the Committee, Jordan's representative reiterated his country's support for the Moroccan initiative, which, he said, is "a serious and realistic mechanism that takes into account the specificities of the region, the territorial integrity and the full sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco on its territory, while remaining in accordance with the United Nations Charter".
Jordan welcomes "the positive commitment of the Kingdom in the search for a final political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue on the basis of compromise, through the presentation of the Autonomy Initiative", he said.
This initiative remains "in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolution No 2468, as well as those of the General Assembly", the diplomat pointed out.
He also commended Morocco's efforts for the development of the Southern Provinces and the improvement of the living conditions of local populations, who benefit from the resources of the region.
Jordan "highly appreciates the efforts of the UN Chief and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara in moving ahead with the political process towards a realistic and sustainable solution to this issue," he said.
He also praised the new momentum generated by the convening of the two round tables held in Geneva.
