Guatemala expressed Monday, in front of the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative in the Sahara, which constitutes a "realistic, credible and serious basis" for the settlement of this dispute

"Guatemala reiterates its support for the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco to seek a political solution to resolve this regional dispute, and considers that the autonomy initiative presented by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007 constitutes a realistic, credible basis and serious to reach a negotiated settlement between the parties, within the framework of the respect of the territorial integrity of Morocco and its national sovereignty ", stressed the ambassador representative of Guatemala with the United Nations, Luis Antonio Lam Padilla .

The Guatemalan diplomat added that his country welcomes the holding of the two round tables in Geneva with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Polisario, and welcomes the commitment of the parties to continue discussions to reach a solution to this conflict.

The settlement of the Sahara issue remains necessary "to ensure the stability, security and integration of the Maghreb region," said the Ambassador of Guatemala.
