Togo reaffirmed, before the United Nations Committee of 24, its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan in the Sahara region, noting that this initiative is a “necessary constructive approach” for the settlement of this regional conflict.

"Togo still considers Morocco's initiative presented in 2007 to grant the Sahara region a wide autonomy as a constructive step towards settling this issue," Togo’s representative pointed out at the meeting.

He also urged the other parties to welcome this initiative in a "constructive spirit" to put an end to this regional conflict.

The Togolese diplomat also said that his country "supports the ongoing political process led by the United Nations which aims to reach a negotiated and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara".

He also welcomed the "full cooperation" of the Kingdom of Morocco with the multilateral bodies for the settlement of this conflict, noting that "the Moroccan authorities have always shown collaboration to facilitate meetings between the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General and representatives of the Sahara".

The diplomat also highlighted Morocco's efforts to develop the Sahara region, including the launch of socio-economic and infrastructure projects, as well as the progress made in the area of human rights.

"My country calls for census of populations in the Tindouf camps in accordance with international law, the requests of the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, and in accordance with the Security Council resolutions adopted since 2011 and the recommendations of the UN Chief in his report on the situation in the Sahara,” he said.
