The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan called on the United Nations Monday to look "seriously" at the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented to the UN Security Council.


Speaking before the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, the representative of Jordan praised "the efforts and reforms undertaken by the Kingdom of Morocco for the development of the Sahara, as well as the recent measures to promote the political participation of the Saharawi population, in particular in the national and parliamentary elections ".


He also called for greater cooperation between parties, stressing the importance of "engaging in negotiations without preconditions and in good faith, leading to a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the dispute, based on the relevant United Nations resolutions, and taking into account the concerns of the Saharawi population ".


Jordan also welcomed the appointment of Mr. Horst Koehler as the new Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Sahara, expressing wish to see his efforts in mediation "bringing points of view and building trust between stakeholders ".
