MEPs denounced taxation of humanitarian aid to the camps, saying that this practice is unacceptable

By imposing a tax on international humanitarian aid, Algeria appears real intentions namely indecent exploitation in Tindouf camps (south-west algeria), said Greek scholar, Nikos Lygeros.

In an article published on his blog, he cited statements by the EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides who revealed recently that humanitarian aid to populations sequestered in Tindouf camps are subject to VAT, indicating that tax revenues represent an average of 200,000 euros per year between 2010 and 2014.

"That's how Algeria helps people in the Tindouf camps in recent years," he writes, ironically, before wondering about the real motivations behind the support shown by Algeria in favor of "the Saharawi cause "while the Algerian government has been indecently exploiting Tindouf camps.

This shows that "the Algerian government is not only embezzling funds allocated by the European Union on humanitarian aid to the camps as revealed in a report by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) but also imposes a tax on humanitarian aid, '' he notes.

This taxation of humanitarian aid that benefits to both Algerian authorities and separatists, is a way for the Algerian government to exploit the misery of the populations sequestered in the camps of shame, adding that the Algerian interference in this artificial conflict is motivated by the intention to maintain the tension in the region and serve the interests of its foreign policy.

MEPs had in fact denounced the taxation of humanitarian aid to the Tindouf camps, saying that this practice is unacceptable. Reports reveal that the European Commission estimates that the revenues from VAT amounted to 1 million euros between 2010 and 2014, an average of 200,000 euros per year, representing 2 per cent of the value of humanitarian aid of the European Union.
