The settlement of the Sahara issue should go through dialogue between Morocco and Algeria with a view to reaching a pragmatic solution, said Thursday former Vice President of the European Parliament, Isabelle Durant.

"It is up to both Moroccans and Algerians much to try to push for a negotiated solution to the Sahara conflict," said Mrs Durant in a statement to MAP, last Wednesday in Brussels.

The Sahara conflict, which has lasted over four decades, cannot be left unresolved indefinitely, she said, noting that the settlement of this regional dispute should go through negotiation, but the problem is how to encourage Algerians to negotiate.

"It is extremely important to bring all parties to the negotiating table to try to bring in the near future a solution to this problem that should be solved, especially since the geopolitical context that led to its creation has changed dramatically ", she insisted.

Mrs Durant expressed also said that the referendum is not the only option to end this conflict, noting that it is equally important and necessary for all parties to advance pragmatic solutions in the short term and especially those that put actors around the table.

The former Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport noted in this regard that the advanced regionalization that Morocco intends to implement can help the settlement of the Sahara issue, provided meaningful powers to the regions and will also help organize the equalization and solidarity between regions.

"I think a certain autonomy framed with a real connection to the federal state is something that can help not only to appease old problems but also to create relations of solidarity between regions," added Mrs. Durant.
