The European Union (EU) welcomed on Tuesday the role of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) in surveillance and defense of human rights in the Sahara.


The 28 EU Member States welcomed the statement following the works of the 12th EU-Morocco Association Council held in Brussels yesterday, the role of the NHRC in surveillance and defense of human rights in Sahara through its committees in Laayoune and Dakhla.


'The EU expresses its commitment to respect human rightsand welcomes in this context the strengthening and the entrenchment of the role of the NHRC in surveillance and defense of human rights, including Sahara through its commissions in Laayoune and Dakhla, '' noted the 28 EU Member States.


The EU also reiterated its commitment to the settlement of the Sahara conflict and its full support to the UN Secretary General's efforts and his Personal Envoy to assist the parties in reaching a "just, lasting and mutually acceptable to all the parties concerned. ''


In this regard, it encouraged "all parties to continue to work with the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in order to progress in the search for such a solution, showing realism and a spirit compromise '.


The EU expressed in this sense the wish that the efforts towards a better Maghreb integration will contribute to progress in this area.
