Polisario leaders must be tried for the crimes and the serious human rights violations committed against thousands of innocent people, Belgian lawyer, Jean Abboud said here Wednesday.

This came at a meeting with the press on the eve of Abboud's departure to New York, where he is expected to hand to the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, a report on human rights violations, committed by the Polisario, in the camps of Tindouf, south-western Algeria, and a request to open an international inquiry on these crimes.

"My report includes real evidence on the appalling practices and demeaning acts of torture committed by the Polisario against women, children and elderly people in Tindouf camps," he said, while showing pictures of the victims he encountered during his fact-finding missions.

Abboud made it clear that he will address the UN to shed light on human rights violations in Tindouf camps to "end all propaganda which portrays the torturers of the Polisario as innocent victims, and restore the rights and dignity of the real victims and their families." These violations, he explained, "were translated into acts of (...) arbitrary abduction, torture and violence against women."

"Algeria has a great responsibility in this situation," he said insisting that "Algeria should assume its responsibility by arresting the authors of the crimes and bringing them before justice."

As Algeria "shelters torturers on its territory, it will bear the consequences of its complicity," he said.

Abboud who asserted that since he started his investigations on the situation in the Tindouf camps he had been victim of intimidation acts and threats, deemed these acts "a despicable behavior" that proves, if need be, that the whole truth has not been revealed on the methods used by the Polisario.
