The Mexican House of Deputies "warmly" received the autonomy project that Morocco proposes for its Southern Provinces (the Sahara), said here Friday the speaker of the Mexican House of Deputies, Jorge Zermeno.

This statement was made in a communiqué released by the Mexican House of Deputies following the visit to Mexico of Moroccan delegation, composed of Foreign Minister, Mohamed Benaissa and chairman of the Advisory Council of Sahara Issues (CORCAS), Khalihenna Ould Errachid, to explain the Moroccan project.

The dispute over the Sahara, a former Spanish colony Morocco retrieved in 1975 under the Madrid Accord, broke out in 1976 when the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists claimed the independence of the territory.

In a bid to solve the dispute for good, Morocco is devising a plan to grant substantial autonomy under its sovereignty. The plan is due to be presented to the UN next month, and Morocco has engaged, for about a month now, an active diplomatic action to explain the proposal to world capitals and drum up support for it.

Zarmeno also expressed his "concern" about the continuation of the Sahara conflict, stressing that his country, will "as a friend country" will back the kingdom’s  efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the Sahara dispute under Moroccan sovereignty.

He also stressed the need to “reach a peaceful solution that is based on the generosity of the parts concerned and on a vision of the future to reach, through ideas, dialog and understanding, a satisfactory exit for all”.

As for Senator Ramon Galindo Noriega, he deemed "a very important sign to the international community" the Moroccan initiative to grant substantial autonomy to the Sahara, noting that this initiative "mirrors the good image of the Kingdom," according to a statment of the Mexican Senate Committee on Foreign relations with Africa.

The committee's chairman, Salomon Jara Cruz hailed the Moroccan project, stressing that the peaceful way is the most adapted mean to solve the conflicts while the Chairman of Mexican Senate Committee on Foreign relations with Europe, José Guadarrama Marquez deemed “intelligent the Moroccan proposal."
