The Peruvian leader made the statement at a meeting with a visiting Moroccan delegation composed of Foreign and Cooperation Minister Mohamed Benaissa, and Chairman of the Royal Consultative Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) Khalihenna Ould Errachid.
During the meeting, the two officials handed the Peruvian president a message from King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
In a statement after the meeting, Alan Garcia underlined the "positive aspects" of the autonomy plan and said he was convinced that the Sahrawi populations would grab "the positive nature" of this initiative that, according to him, will certainly be favorably welcomed by the United Nations.
By granting substantial autonomy to the Sahara, Morocco wishes to put an end to the dispute with the Algerian-backed separatist movement “Polisario” that is claiming the independence of the territory.
Several Moroccan delegation are touring the world capitals to explain the broad lines of the draft autonomy plan before its presentation, in its final version, next April to the UN Security Council.
