The vice-chairman of the International Liberal (IL), Holland's Hans Van Baalen, has hailed as a "good proposal" Morocco's project to grant large autonomy to its Southern Provinces, the Sahara.

Baalen told the Arabi-speaking daily, Risalat Al Umma in an interview published on Saturday that this proposal would consolidate development and reinforce human rights in these provinces.

Morocco is mulling a proposal to grant large autonomy - under its sovereignty and territorial integrity - to the Sahara to solve the dispute related to these provinces, which the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists lay claim to since the mid-Seventies.

The IL hails the idea of autonomy to the Southern Provinces within the framework of the Moroccan sovereignty and considers it "the best solution to this conflict," Baalen told the paper, affirming that "this solution guarantees the development of these regions.”

Baalen is taking part in the meetings of the 54th congress of the International Liberal kicked off on Friday with the participation of about 500 personalities from 95 countries.

On Friday, the Secretary General of the Union Constitutionnelle Party, Mohamed Abied described as a “breakthrough” IL’s stance vis-à-vis the autonomy project, compared to its position, just about a decade ago, “marked with hostility” towards the Moroccan cause.
