Gabon reaffirmed, Thursday before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, which presents "credible prospects" allowing to definitively resolve the conflict "over the Moroccan Sahara", saying that "it is, undeniably, the best approach and a solution of compromise par excellence".

"This is undoubtedly one of the reasons why the resolutions of the Security Council describe this initiative as credible, pragmatic and in conformity with international law", said the Permanent Representative of the Gabonese Republic to the UN, Ambassador Michel Xavier Biang.

The ambassador also stressed that the Moroccan development model has "strongly contributed to the improvement of living conditions and to the empowerment of the populations of the Sahara, while allowing them to have access to the resources of the region".

Gabon encourages Morocco to continue the efforts, he said, noting that it is in this context that his country opened last January a Consulate General in the city of Laâyoune.

Reiterating his country's support for the ongoing political process led under the aegis of the United Nations Secretary-General, Biang assured that this political process, based essentially on the recommendations laid down in the relevant Security Council resolutions since 2007, will undoubtedly make it possible to reach a political solution that is realistic, pragmatic, durable and of compromise.

In order to preserve the achievements and the progress already achieved, he went on, Gabon hopes that the next Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General will ensure the continuity of the work conducted by his predecessor, as part of the process of round tables in which Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the "polisario" took part.

"While the Sahel region is marked by security challenges, it is fundamental to work for a rapid political settlement of this regional situation which compromises cooperation between the states of the region", said the Gabonese diplomat.

The involvement of all relevant actors is likely to minimize the risks of destabilization generated by terrorist activities while building peace and security in the Sahel region, he concluded.

For his part, Equatorial Guinea welcomed, before the Committee, Morocco's efforts to reach a peaceful, political and final solution to this regional dispute.

The representative of Equatorial Guinea also expressed his support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy for the success of the political process, for the benefit of the populations of the whole region.

For his part, the representative of Togo paid tribute, on this occasion, to the Secretary-General of the United Nations for his efforts in favor of dialogue conducive to a final resolution of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara within the framework of the political process led under the auspices of the United Nations.
