Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres highlighted, in his report to the members of the Security Council, the efforts and achievements made by Morocco for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the Moroccan Sahara.

In this regard, the Secretary General referred to the letter sent to him by the Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale, on August 14, 2020, presenting the Kingdom's progress in terms of respect, and promotion and protection of human rights in the Moroccan Sahara.

Guterres thus informed the Security Council that he had received information on "the daily promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms" in the Moroccan Sahara, adding that he was also informed of "violations of human rights, fundamental freedoms and international humanitarian law in the Tindouf camps".

In his letter to the UN Secretary-General, Ambassador Hilale notably highlighted Morocco's fruitful cooperation and interaction with the UN human rights bodies, in particular the special procedures of the Human Rights Council and Human Rights Treaty Bodies.

He also underlined the progress made on a daily basis in the Moroccan Sahara in terms of the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, underscoring, in this context, the crucial role of the Regional Commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Laâyoune and Dakhla.

In all its resolutions since 2011, the Security Council "welcomed the measures and initiatives taken by Morocco, the role played by the commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Dakhla and Laâyoune and the interaction between Morocco and the bodies under the special procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council".

In his letter, Ambassador Hilale presented the national strategy adopted by Morocco, upon the High Royal Instructions, to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and counter its consequences, throughout the entire Moroccan territory, including its southern provinces
