Autonomy in the framework of the Moroccan sovereignty is the "best solution" to the Sahara dispute, said Gabonese President Haj Omar Bongo.

President Bongo was speaking at a meeting, Monday in Libreville, with Morocco's new Ambassador to Gabon, Ali Bojji.

He reiterated his country's "constant support" to Morocco in its search of a peaceful solution to the Sahara dispute opposing the North African country to the Algeria-backed separatist movement "Polisario".

Moroccan is presenting to the United Nations a proposal on autonomy to its southern provinces, known as the Sahara. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by the Kingdom under the 1975 Madrid Accords signed with Spain and Mauritania. The Polisario Front has ever since been seeking to separate the territory from the rest of Morocco.

Ambassador Bojji, who presented on the occasion his credentials to the President of Gabon, told the Moroccan News Agency MAP he informed the latter on the latest developments of the Sahara issue, including the recent setting up of the Royal Advisory Council for Sahrawi Affairs (CORCAS) which would assist the king in all the issues related to defending the kingdom’s territorial integrity and national unity, promote economic and social development of the southern provinces and preserve their cultural identity.

The ambassador also said the latest UNSC resolution on the issue reinforce the stand of Morocco on seeking a political and negotiated solution to the dispute.
