"Polisario is not a legitimate representative of the Sahrawis," affirmed, here Wednesday, former President of the autonomous government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Fernandez Martin.

Speaking at a meeting with representatives of the southern provinces civil society and the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan affaires (CORCAS), Martin, who is a deputy of the Spanish Popular Party in the European Parliament (EP), voiced his conviction that "the majority of the Sahrawis do not consider themselves represented by polisario."

"Polisario" waged war on Morocco in 1975 claiming the separation of the north African country southern provinces, known as the Sahara, after they were retrieved by the kingdom pursuant to the Madrid accords, signed by Spain, Mauritania and Morocco.

The Spanish official noted that "Algeria supports the Polisario front which receives assistance from associations in the Sahrawi people's name, which it does not represent in any way."

Martin, who is in charge of the development and cooperation committee within the EP, said he will submit a memorandum to the EP to reduce the sufferings of the sequestered Sahrawis in the Tindouf camps, south-western Algeria, through a regular visits exchange between the members of the Sahrawi families, who have been separated for three decades.
