The projet on a larger autonomy for the Moroccan southern provinces is "a good proposal", affirmed Jean-Claude Gaudin, Vice-Speaker of the French Senate, describing the move as "interesting" as it brings closer the various viewpoints.

Gaudin statement was made at the end of a meeting here on Wednesday with a delegation of the Royal Advisory Council for Sahrawi Affairs (Corcas).

During the meeting, Corcas President, Khalihenna Ould Errachid, spoke of the historical evolution of the Sahara conflict and the current impasse the issue is currently in.

He added the mission of the council is to prepare diplomatic, political, economic and social conditions to arrive at a lasting solution to the dispute through enlarged autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.

Corcas president said the Moroccan proposal on autonomy “is a first in the African continent and in the Arab-Moslem world”, stressing there is no other possible option to settle the issue, but a political solution accepted by all the parties.

The UNO is aware that a self-rule referendum is « impossible and unacceptable » owing to several factors, Errachid said highlighting that the conflict « is a mere product of the cold war » and that the Sahara issue « is a purely Moroccan-Moroccan affair ».

The baker Plan is “buried for good” and the latest UN Security Council resolution clearly favours a political solution to the conflict, he went on to say.

« If Algeria is not concerned by the issue, it should let us set dialog with ‘Polisario’ to materialize the autonomy and put an end to the dispute », Errachid said.

Morocco is presenting to the UNO a project on autonomy for the country southern provinces, that have been object to a dispute started in the mid-seventies by the Algeria-backed “Polisario” that claims the separation of the provinces from Morocco, after the latter retrieved them from Spanish rule under the Madrid accord.
