President of the Royal Advisory Council for Sahrawi Affairs (CORCAS), Khalihenna Ould Errachid, said the settlement of the Sahara conflict will be a win-win situation for Spain, adding the dispute and the creation of the so-called "Polisario" do not relate to the Spanish people.

"Spain is the closest country to the Maghreb", he said adding that "geographically and strategically, it is to fully benefit" from the resolution of the conflict, sparked in the mid-seventies by the Algeria-backed "Polisario" claim to separate the Moroccan southern provinces from Morocco, which retrieved them at that time from Spanish rule, under the Madrid accord.

Visiting Errachid told "La Razon" daily of Monday autonomy to the provinces is the sole solution able to put an end to the conflict that "has entered a sterile stage that will only bring in negative things".

CORCAS President stressed the referendum opted for at first by the UNO before it dropped it is not viable and that the creation of a micro State can only lead to an unending war, as is the case in Sudan, Somalia and Rwanda.

The conflict is still going on « because the UNO chose a faulty mechanism: the auto-determination process through a referendum based on the identification (of those eligible to vote), which has never been implemented in anywhere in the world », Errachid said, noting the Spanish 1974 census excluded large numbers of Sahrawis, living far from Laâyoune close to Algeria, Mauritania and Mali.

Morocco is presenting to the United Nations a proposal on autonomy to the southern provinces to enable the populations there ran their local affairs as a solution to the dispute. Errachid said that “the tapping of the wealth (of the provinces) will be discussed in the detailed plan”.

He asked « Polisario » leaders to get rid of the « one-thought and the one-doctrine » mindset and to embrace democracy to contribute to the autonomy solution.
