Chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Sahrawi Affairs (CORCAS), Khelli Henna Ould Errachid, said the autonomy proposal regarding the Sahara issue within the Moroccan sovereignty is in line with international legality.

The proposal secures to the Sahrawis their rights and is conform to international legality, for it is a solution to the Sahara conflict preserving the rights of all the parties, Errachid told the TVM channel.

Morocco is making a proposal to the United nations as a solution to the Sahara dispute that erupted in the mid seventies due to the claim of the Algeria-backed « Polisario » to separate the Moroccan southern provinces, known as the Sahara, retrieved at the time from Spain under the Madrid
accords.

The autonomy proposal is historic for it is made in a reconciliation move and aims to both find an administrative or political solution and associate involved parties to work out and implement the solution, he said.

Speaking of his trips abroad, Errachid said they availed him with the opportunity to explain the new royal policy on the issue, CORCAS  structures and the autonomy proposal, as well as clearing ambiguities on several issues, including that the “Polisario” is not the sole and legitimate representative of the Sahrawis and that the majority of Sahrawis living under Moroccan sovereignty fully and unconditionally support the autonomy project.

He added the people living in the Tindouf camps, south-west Algeria, (where they were lured through propaganda by “Polisario”) and several members of the latter also back the autonomy seeing in it a solution that guaranties political, economic and social rights to the Sahrawis, at large.

CORCAS is a framework of consultation that assists the king in all the issues related to defending the kingdom’s territorial integrity and national unity, promote economic and social development of the southern provinces and preserve their cultural identity.
