The Moroccan autonomy initiative in the southern provinces is the one and only solution to resolve the conflict in the Moroccan Sahara, said, Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan, Morocco's permanent representative to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, who chairs the Moroccan delegation to the ministerial preparatory meeting for the 18th Non-Aligned Movement Summit.

Speaking at the meeting, the diplomat said that Morocco reaffirms that "the achievement of our common aspirations remains dependent on constructive efforts to mobilize the energies of our Movement in order to contribute to peaceful solutions to international and regional disputes within the framework of respect for the principles of the Movement".

In accordance with the UN Charter and the Movement's principles guaranteeing respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, Morocco has joined the United Nations efforts to reach a negotiated, realistic and consensus-based political solution to the territorial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

As part of its commitment to the principle of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, Morocco presented its initiative for the autonomy of the Moroccan Sahara, described by the international community as serious, credible and realistic with a view to achieving peace in the region, Hilale said, stressing that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is the one and only solution to this artificial conflict.

The Moroccan diplomat added that the Kingdom welcomes the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General to relaunch the political process on the basis of the parameters set by the Security Council since 2007 in order to achieve a realistic, pragmatic, lasting and consensus-based political solution.

These efforts, he recalled, had led to the holding of two round-table meetings in Geneva with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and polisario, adding that the Security Council, in its Resolution 2468 of 30 April 2019, reaffirmed its support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General to advance the political process in the same way as the two round-table meetings, based on a spirit of realism and consensus to ensure its success.
