The European Union (EU) welcomed, on Thursday, the renewal of MINURSO mandate through Security Council Resolution 2468, adopted April 30 , supporting the efforts of the UN to reach a solution just, sustainable and mutually acceptable solution to the Moroccan sahara, based on compromise.

"MINURSO plays an important role in ensuring stability on the ground and in supporting the UN process for the Sahara,"  EU spokeswoman said in a statement to MAP.

The EU, spokeswoman added, "supports the efforts by the Secretary-General's personal envoy, Horst Kohler and the United Nations, to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution ( ...) based on  compromise, in the framework of arrangements consistent with the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter ".

The UN Security Council decided last Tuesday to extend the mandate of MINURSO by six months, while recognizing the pre-eminence of the Moroccan autonomy plan. Likewise, the resolution reiterates Algeria as a  key part of the process of finding "a political, realistic, practical and sustainable " and "compromise-based" solution to the  Moroccan Sahara.
