The resolution 2468 on the Sahara, adopted on Tuesday by the UN Security Council, has a special significance, said Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, underlining that this resolution includes a qualitative evolution, contains structuring components for the political process and sets the parameters for the final solution to this regional dispute.

The Security Council identifies by the name the parties to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, Bourita said in a statement to the press, adding that, for the first time since 1975, the Council mentions Algeria 5 times in this resolution. The Security Council acknowledges therefore that a strong, continuous and constructive involvement by Algeria is necessary to put an end to this long-running regional dispute, he noted. The Council confirms clearly the outlines of the solution, said the minister, adding that the latter should be, in conformity with paragraph 2 of resolution 2468, "political, realistic, pragmatic, durable, and based on compromise". It is pivotal to note that the parameters set by the UNSC are in harmony with the Moroccan stance. The term compromise was mentioned at least 5 times in the resolution. The notion of realism is used at least 4 times, while favorite references of other parties were ignored (self-determination quoted only once), even dismissed (complete absence of any reference to referendum), said Bourita who affirmed that the UNSC has thus strongly rejected the attachment by other parties to the "referendum" and "independence" which are neither realistic, pragmatic, and mutually acceptable, nor based on compromise." He added that the resolution fosters Morocco's accomplishments in the previous resolutions, notably the pre-eminence of the autonomy initiative and the pressing need to conduct a headcount of the populations in the camps of Tindouf in Algeria, noting that the resolution reiterates the injunction to the polisario to respect the ceasefire, since paragraph 6 recalls commitment by the polisario to the personal envoy to withdraw from Guergarate and refrain from any destabilizing action in Bir Lahlou and Tifariti. The minister said that the Kingdom of Morocco hopes that this resolution will give a strong impetus to the political process and that, on the basis of the parameters set therein, each party will fully shoulder its responsibilities to move towards the "realistic, pragmatic and durable policy based on compromise" as desired by the international community. The Kingdom of Morocco reiterated its willingness to reach a solution of compromise under its autonomy initiative, he said, hoping that the process under way could generate real momentum, depart from rhetoric and prevent meetings from becoming an end themselves.
