The Republic of Benin calls for a political solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, affirming its strong support for the exclusive role of the United Nations as a consensual framework to lead to the final settlement of this issue

In a joint statement issued at the end of the 6th session of the Morocco-Benin High Joint Committee, which was co-chaired monday in Marrakech, by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, and his Beninese peer, Aurelien Agbenonci.
Benin reiterates its steady stance expressed during the Royal visit in 2004 and calls for a political solution to the dispute, while expressing its strong support for the exclusive role of the United Nations as a consensual framework leading to the final settlement of this issue.

The joint statement also notes that the two ministers welcomed the convergence of the two countries' visions on regional and international issues and expressed the willingness of the two countries to foster the stability and the development of the African continent.

They also stressed that regional integration is among the key factors driving the development of trade and investment. In this regard, they welcomed the convergence of vision of the two Heads of State regarding South-South cooperation as a lever for integration and development in Africa and called for the strengthening of cooperation between Morocco and West-African countries.

The two FMs have equally underlined, on this occasion, their commitment to building a mutually beneficial strategic partnership. On this occasion, the legal framework governing bilateral cooperation has been strengthened by the signing of several agreements in several areas, including justice, energy and vocational training.

The two ministers also have examined cooperation between the two countries and welcomed progress made in various areas of cooperation. In this regard, Bourita said that Morocco is willing to support the 2016-2021 Government Action Program launched by President of the Republic of Benin, Patrice Talon.

The joint statement also underlines that businessmen from both countries are invited to explore trade and investment opportunities.
