The contribution of elected representatives of the southern provinces consecrates their status as legitimate mouthpieces of Saharawi population and values the meeting

The participation of the elected representatives of the southern provinces in the Geneva round table on the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara consecrates their status as legitimate spokespersons of the Saharawi population concerned by this artificial conflict, said the president of the region of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, Sidi Hamdi Ould Errachid.


We have informed the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, and the concerned parties that there is a real voice that expresses the expectations of the local people, a voice that is realistic, legitimate," said Mr. Ould Errachid who was part of the Moroccan delegation taking part in the Geneva Round Table.


Speaking at a press conference at the headquarters of the permanent diplomatic mission of Morocco to the UN in Geneva, Mr. Ould Errachid, noted that this participation of legitimate representatives of the Saharawi population "is a first in relation at previous meetings ".

"We hope that our participation in future meetings will have added value," he added, expressing the hopes of the Saharawi population for efforts to settle this issue, which is hindering Maghreb integration.

For his part, the president of the region of Dakhla Oued Edahab, Ynja Khattat, also a member of the Moroccan delegation to the round table of Geneva, underlined that "the composition of this delegation which includes elected representatives and actors of the civil society in the southern provinces is a clear message about the role of Saharawi population representatives in the settlement of the artificial dispute around the Moroccan Sahara ".

The discussions were an opportunity, he said, to highlight the political participation of the various actors of civil society in the southern provinces, the role of elected officials in the management of local affairs, the implementation advanced regionalization and the contribution of economic, political and civil society actors to this dynamic in the southern provinces.


According to Ynja, the Geneva Round Table also provided an opportunity to highlight the progress made in the southern provinces at all levels with the participation of the local population, as well as the role of women and young people as active components in Saharawi society He also highlighted the interest in the development of the Sahara region, through the implementation of major projects and investment programs, including the new model of development of the southern provinces Ms. Fatima Adli, activist association of the city of Smara, and first elected Saharawi since 1992, highlighted the role played by the Saharawi woman for the defense of the national cause, welcoming efforts to consolidate the place of women in this region in different areas.


She highlighted the distinguished participation of Saharawi women in political life in the Moroccan Sahara region, in elected councils and in the field of human rights, in the wake of the achievements recorded by Moroccan women in different domains.


In addition, she focused on the representativeness of Sahrawi women and youth in elected councils in the southern provinces, as well as on the experiences of women from these regions in the management of cooperatives and associations in the South.This press conference was attended by Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation who led the Moroccan delegation to this round table and Mr. Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations New York. The round table on the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara in Geneva ended on Thursday.
