Gabon reaffirmed on Monday before the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, its favorable position to the Moroccan autonomy plan which presents "credible and reassuring" prospects in order to reach a durable political solution to the Sahara conflict.

"Gabon welcomes and encourages the Moroccan autonomy plan, which presents credible and reassuring perspectives that will not only put an end to the current stalemate, but also achieve a mutually acceptable and negotiated political solution," said Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Michel Xavier Biang, during a session of the general debate of the 4th Committee.

He added that his country reaffirms its support for the ongoing political process under the auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and strongly supports facilitation mission by the Personal Envoy.

According to him, the confirmation of the Moroccan participation in the round table, to be held in Geneva December 5-6, demonstrates "the willingness of the Moroccan authorities to fully cooperate with a view to a political solution to this regional dispute".

"Gabon once again encourages all neighboring countries to cooperate and unite their efforts to ensure the success of this round table, which is a prelude to the stability and socio-economic development of the region," he said, stressing that "the involvement of all will help minimize the risks of destabilization generated by terrorist activities and help consolidate peace and security in the Sahel region".

The Gabonese diplomat also praised the efforts of the Moroccan authorities in favor of the economic and social development of the Sahara through socio-economic and infrastructure projects, as well as progress made in the field of Human Rights which were mainly marked by the strengthening of the role of the regional commissions of the National Council of Human Rights in Laayoune and Dakla, as well as by cooperation with the Commissioner for Human Rights and interaction with special procedures.
