"Legal process initiated by Polisario aims to undermine UN process"

In a tribune published on Dipublico, Ana Palacio, former Spanish Foreign Minister, is calling for an end to the Polisario's new strategy to go third-party courts, saying that this tactic aims to undermine the UN's efforts to settle the Sahara conflict.

A vibrant plea has just been launched by the former Spanish Foreign Minister, Ana Palacio, for the settlement of the Sahara conflict.

Under "Future for the Sahara" title, the former head of the Spanish diplomacy published on the Dipublico site an article in which she considers that "there is a real possibility to settle the Sahara conflict".

"The new aggressive campaign of the Polisario Front" aims to undermine the process initiated by the United Nations to find a political solution to this dispute ".

"It is necessary to question the new aggressive campaign of the Polisario Front against two thirds of the Sahara territory" over which Morocco is sovereign, while the reste remaining "liberated territories" is indeed placed under the supervision of the United Nations .

"After the Security Council approved Mr. Guterres call to resume the negotiating process, Polisario Front has seized a civil court in South Africa, seeking to seize a cargo of Phosphate extracted from the Sahara territory," says former Spanish minister, currently member of the Spanish State Council.

"A few days later, a similar challenge was launched in Panama against another ship carrying phosphate. The Panamanian court rejected the appeal," noted the former vice president of the World Bank, stating that the rejection of Polisario's appeal by (Maritime) Panamanian court was motivated by the diplomatic and political undertones of this case.

"But the South African issue is underway," notes Ana Palacio, openly denouncing "this new tactic of using civil courts of third countries in an attempt to hurt Morocco and undermine the UN process."

The former Spanish Foreign Minister critisized Algeria, considered in Resolution 2351 adopted at the end of April by fifteen members of the Security Council, as part of the Sahara conflict.

"A solution to the Sahara conflict can only be reached if all parties - in particular Polisario Front and Morocco, but also neighboring countries, in particular Algeria - commit themselves," says Ana Palacio, also lecturer At Georgetown University in the United States.

"In fact, the entire international community has an interest in supporting the UN process and has a responsibility to do everything possible to ensure the success of this process," she urged.
