A large Moroccan delegation met Wednesday with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon to inform him about Morocco's proposal to grant substantial autonomy, under its sovereignty, to its Southern Provinces -the Sahara- and settle a 30-year-old dispute over the territory with the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists.

The delegation, dispatched by king Mohammed VI, stressed in the meeting with the UN official that the Moroccan proposal is in line with the relevant international standards, and respects the regional specificities and the expectations of the local populations.

It is also an open and constructive response to the expectations of the international community and to the repeated calls of the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary General and his personal envoy to overcome the present stalemate and find a lasting, political and mutually acceptable solution to this regional dispute.

Composed of Moroccan Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs, Taieb Fassi Fihri, Minister Delegate in the Interior, Fouad Ali Al Himma, head of the Moroccan Intelligence, Yassine Mansouri, and chairman of the Advisory Council for Sahara Issues, Khalihenna Ould Errachid, the delegation also informed Ki-Moon about the encouraging consultations between Morocco and the members of the Security Council, the countries of the region and the concerned capitals.

The visit is part of Morocco’s active diplomatic action before several western, Arab and Latin American capitals to inform them of the plan and drum up support for it before its submission to the UN next month.
